Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Romain Folz has discussed two reasons why he ditched his FIFA role to join the Brazilians.
The French-Moroccan coach was added to Manqoba Mngqithi’s backroom staff at the beginning of the 2024/25 season following the departure of previous head coach Rulani Mokwena, with some technical team members, including former assistant coach Michael Loftman.
‘Fohloza’ had served as Performance Manager at FIFA since November 2023, a position he took up after a brief stint with Guinea’s Horoya SC.
In an interview with Mamelodi Sundowns Magazine, Folz expressed satisfaction with his work at FIFA and mentioned that he was engaged in several ongoing projects.
However, when Sundowns presented him with an opportunity, he saw it as a golden chance to work with a “top club” on the continent, competing in prestigious competitions like the CAF Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
CHANCE TO SERVE ‘TOP CLUB IN AFRICA’ FOR ROMAIN FOLZ
“To be honest, I was very happy with my role at FIFA; I had a lot of responsibilities, working with good people on meaningful projects,” said Folz. “But when Sundowns came calling, so many elements came into play. The prospect of working with a top club in Africa, playing numerous games and competing in several competitions was incredibly appealing.
“I also have great respect for the Motsepe family and what they have done for South African football. Their level of passion, dedication and enthusiasm for the club is truly inspiring.”
The 34-year-old also cited the opportunity to work alongside Mngqithi, with whom he shares a similar footballing philosophy, as a significant factor in his decision.
OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH MANQOBA MNGQITHI
He continued, “Additionally, working with coach Manqoba Mngqithi was a significant factor in my decision. I share many football ideas with him, and I believe that our combined vision can elevate the team further.
“The opportunity to collaborate with a coaching staff that values innovation and player development aligns perfectly with my philosophy.
“I see this as a chance to contribute not only to the club’s success but also to the growth of the players and the entire organisation.”
