UMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) President Jacob Zuma has chosen Floyd Shivhambu as the party’s new Secretary General, starting from Sunday.
This was announced by MKP’s Head of Presidency, Magasela Mzobe on Sunday morning.
“As prescribed by the MKP Constitution, the President has, in consultation with MKP national officials, appointed Nyiko Floyd Shivhambu as the Secretary General of uMkhonto WeSizwe Party, effective immediately,” said Mzobe.
Mzobe explained that Shivhambu is replacing Dr Sifiso Maseko, who decided to return to his job as Deputy Director of Infrastructure at the Gauteng Department of Health. Maseko will still remain part of the MKP leadership team.
Shivhambu joined MKP in August as National Organizer after leaving the EFF. Since then, he’s faced threats from his former EFF colleagues, who say they will release messages between him and powerful businessman Johan Rupert.
Shivhambu is the seventh person to take the role of Secretary General in less than a year since Zuma joined the MKP. The MKP has been drawing in top EFF members, including former National Chairperson Advocate Dali Mpofu and others.
Mzobe, who also left the EFF, is said to be leading the effort to bring more EFF leaders to MKP, especially those he worked with in the ANC Youth League and SASCO at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
