Floyd Shivambu’s future in doubt ahead of MK-or-break address

Speculation is rife regarding Floyd Shivambu’s future at uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party. This comes ahead of the Shivambu’s press conference, set for Thursday, 19 June.

The press conference is expected to touch on “political developments in the country” and it follows the MK Party president Jacob Zuma’s decision to remove Shivambu from the position of secretary-general.

The party took action after Shivambu travelled to Malawi over Easter to attend a service at Shepherd Bushiri’s church.

Bushiri is a fugitive. He and his wife, Mary, fled South Africa in 2020 while out on bail. They face charges of fraud and money laundering.

IS FLOYD SHIVAMBU RETURNING TO EFF?

Many quarters have started speculating that Shivambu might be returning to the Red Berets. However, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has publicly said that would not happen “because the CCT [central command team] and the National Assembly [of the EFF] rejected the offer”.

EFF member of Parliament, Sixolise Gcilishe, also weighed in on the rumour that Shivambu could return to the Red Berets.

“Juju [Malema] will sadly forgive Floyd, because he is a man with a beautiful heart. He’s forgiven people who have done worse to him. People who threatened his family and swore to bury him alive. He will forgive him [Shivambu]. But what he will not do is bring him back in the EFF. Unfortunately…”

Others are also suggesting that Shivambu may start his own party. During the MK Party’s launch of its youth division on Monday, 16 June, Zuma said those who wanted to leave the party were welcome to do so.
