South Africa’s most iconic football rivalry will take centre stage twice over the next two weekends as Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates prepare for a dramatic double-header in both league and cup competitions.
The historic foes will first face off in the 108th league edition of the Soweto derby on Saturday, 3 May at the FNB Stadium, followed by a highly anticipated rematch in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday, 10 May at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
Despite recent form favouring Orlando Pirates – who have beaten Kaizer Chiefs in their last three league meetings – the Glamour Boys will be eager to bounce back and reclaim bragging rights in a rivalry that has captivated the nation for over five decades.
Anything but predictable
Kaizer Chiefs lead the overall league head-to-head with 45 wins to Orlando Pirates’ 25, with 36 matches ending in draws since the first derby on 24 April 1971.
More recently, the rivalry has been anything but predictable.
The most recent 11 Soweto derby league matches have all produced a winner and been decided by just a single goal – highlighting the intense competition between the two Soweto giants.
Kaizer Chiefs will also be motivated by the opportunity to disrupt Orlando Pirates’ push for the league title and secure a top-eight finish to qualify for next season’s MTN8.
The league encounter may also offer psychological momentum heading into the Nedbank Cup final a week later.
While Orlando Pirates seek redemption after their recent CAF Champions League exit, Kaizer Chiefs, despite inconsistent form, are determined to restore pride and possibly send a strong message before the season’s conclusion.
Final encounter
Saturday’s clash will also mark the final league derby for Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro, who is set to depart the club at the end of the season.
Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Riveiro reflected on the significance of the derby and the impact South African football has had on his life.
“Personally, it has changed my life. I am impressed with the league – not only my players. It’s nice to have such talented players. I tell them all the time that they make me happy having to manage such talent.”
While the occasion is a personal milestone, Riveiro emphasised the importance of bouncing back after recent results and delivering a performance worthy of the supporters.
“We are looking for victory. That’s important for us and the fans. We need to get back on track.”
On the pressure surrounding derby day, Riveiro remained calm and focused.
“We understand the responsibility – we are a winning team.”
As Riveiro prepares for his final league derby at the iconic venue, the Spaniard shared a heartfelt message:
“This is my last derby at FNB. It’s a special place – not only for me but for the players as well.”
