Freedom Front Plus(FF Plus) says it will investigate its councillor in Swellendam local municipality, Juan van Schalwyk’s decision to support a motion sponsored by the ANC to remove DA mayor Francois du Rand, from office.

Councillors at the municipality in the Western Cape voted on Monday, 27 January, and a new mayor is set to be elected on Monday, 3 February.

FF PLUS COUNCILLOR VOTES WITH ANC TO REMOVE DA MAYOR FROM OFFICE

Party leader Pieter Groenewald said Schalwyk’s conduct runs counter to the its decision that the party will not support nor agree with the ANC in a motion of no confidence of this nature.

Groenewald said the cooperative stability pact for the Western Cape between himself and the DA leader, John Steenhuisen, has already reached an advanced stage and he is expecting final feedback from Steenhuisen soon.

“The Swellendam incident will be referred to the relevant structures in the party for thorough investigation and appropriate action,” Groenewald said.

ORANIA RESIDENT VOTES FOR THE EFF

Following the 2024 provincial and national elections, a screenshot of the election results in Orania was a trending topic on social media.

Orania is a controversial white-only town in the Northern Cape that is independent from South Africa as it has its own currency and government. The town was founded in 1991 by Carel Boshoff Snr, an Afrikaner intellectual and son-in-law of apartheid architect Hendrik Verwoerd

According to the figures, 376 people voted for the VF Plus, 127 chose the DA, and 38 voted for Hope4SA. The numbers dwindled, with a handful of residents voting for the ACDP and other smaller opposition parties.

The biggest surprise was that one Orania resident chose to vote for the EFF in the elections.
