Explore the hidden gems of Melville Koppies: Prices and route options

With many Gauteng residents hiking at the coast this festive season, there are always outdoor enthusiasts who haven’t had the luxury of getting out of the concrete jungle.

The good news is that Johannesburg has beautiful nature escapes right on its doorstep.

From mountain club hikers and trail runners to solo explorers, the trails at Melville Koppies have come alive with visitors this summer.

A selection of hiking routes

Open to the public every Sunday from 8:00 to 11:30, the Melville Koppies offer a variety of experiences for nature lovers.

These options were enhanced this spring when the Melville Koppies conservation team opened a new hiking route.

The newly unveiled path traverses a rugged rocky ridge that was previously inaccessible to the public.

Visitors can take part in the following:

5km self-guided trail: Perfect for those seeking a scenic adventure at their own pace.
3km heritage trail: A journey through the Koppies’ storied past.
Scavenger hunt: A fun and engaging option for curious minds.

The cost for the above is R90 for adults, and R50 for under 18s.

For a deeper dive into the history and significance of the Koppies, guided tours are available at R100 for adults, and R50 for those under 18.

Looking for something unique? Melville Koppies host special monthly activities

Once a month, the Melville Koppies host a poetry and open mic session. Where creativity meets nature, the sessions take place every second Sunday at 8:30.

Visitors can rest assured about their safety, thanks to on-site security and secure parking available across from the entrance at Marks Park Sports Club on Judith Road, Emmarentia.

“All income generated goes directly toward maintaining the Melville Koppies,” explained Jenny Grice, a Melville Koppies volunteer.
