Donald Trump and Elon Musk break up
What was once a powerful alliance between Elon Musk and US President Donald Trump has come crashing down in dramatic fashion, sparking concerns about the future of SpaceX and the American space program.
The fallout came just days after Trump signed a controversial spending bill, triggering a wave of criticism from Musk.
On Wednesday, 28 May 2025, Musk announced the end of his term as a Special Government Employee, just hours after the bill was unveiled.
While the timing raised eyebrows, Musk made it clear that the legislation was the breaking point.
He publicly slammed the bill on social media, describing it as an “abomination” and warning that it would “undermine the department’s work while ballooning the deficit.”
The situation escalated quickly when Trump, during a fiery exchange in the Oval Office, reportedly lashed out at Musk and threatened to terminate the government’s $22 billion contract with SpaceX.
In retaliation, Musk declared that he would begin decommissioning SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, which is heavily relied upon by NASA.
Online, the public had plenty to say about the clash.
One user, @Kanthan2030, commented, “Trump just set back US space program by a decade,” while @TorstenProchnow added, “This is no longer just a war of words; it is a direct challenge with real consequences for the nation’s space program and economic stability.”
