Spring is officially in full swing and with summer not being too far away, these are often some of the most difficult seasons for those who must deal with sinus.
This is because while sinus may affect individuals throughout the year, it is usually between spring and summer that three pollen levels start to peak and last until the end of March.
“Sinusitis is an inflammation of the tissues in your sinuses (spaces in your forehead, cheeks, and nose usually filled with air). It causes facial pain, a stuffy or runny nose, and sometimes a fever and other symptoms. It’s usually caused by the common cold, but other viruses, bacteria, fungi and allergies can also cause sinusitis,” explains the medical information hub, Cleveland Clinic.
The health publication Excellent of Alabama also mentions that temperature changes are another contributing factor in triggering one’s sinus.
“On hot days, when the air is dry, the mucus in your nose may become thick and sticky, which blocks the sinuses and can cause stuffiness and/or headaches. Changes in barometric pressure, like when a summer thunderstorm pops up in the afternoon, can trigger sinus pain and headaches as well,” states the above-mentioned publication.
However, it is helpful to know that there are several things you can do to help relieve your sinus pressure.
Here are some as recommended by a reputable health and wellness publication, Healthline:
Steam– Steam is recommended as an effective way of moistening the air. This allows for the breaking down of mucus and the clearing of nasal passages. The most effective ways of achieving this is by taking a hot shower, the use of a humidifier, or breathing over a hot cup of tea.
Eucalyptus – Adding eucalyptus oil to your bath water or vapouriser is another way of speeding one’s recovery. “Eucalyptus contains cineole, an ingredient that may speed the healing of viral sinusitis. The oil also may help to reduce nasal stuffiness and clear your pathways,” explains Healthline.
Hydration – With dehydration being one of the things that results in the drying out of your sinus passages. Drinking lots of liquids has been proven to be effective in countering this condition. This includes fluids, such as tea, soup or even water-saturated fruits like watermelon.
