The death toll from the Eastern Cape floods has reached 103, with more than 30 children confirmed among the dead, as recovery operations continue in the worst-affected areas.

Provincial officials stated that most victims originated from the OR Tambo and Amathole districts.

Torrential rains left widespread destruction in Mthatha and surrounding villages, damaging homes, schools, roads and bridges.

Thousands Left Homeless

According to eNCA, the floods affected more than 6 000 households, leaving over 4 000 people homeless.

Weeks after the disaster, many communities remain displaced and without basic services.

Rescue teams have so far identified and collected 98 bodies, while search crews continue looking for the remaining victims in rivers and debris.

Relief and Recovery Efforts Underway

A large-scale relief operation is providing food, clothing and temporary shelters. Plans are underway to build over 1 000 temporary homes for displaced families.

Officials thanked communities and private donors for their support and assured residents that recovery efforts would continue in the coming weeks and months.
