Former PSL winner Benni McCarthy appears reluctant to coach in Africa.
“La Liga or the Portuguese league, that’s where I’m looking to go,” he noted.
Europe is soccer’s prized destination, luring players and coaches from Brazil to Cape Town, but that doesn’t mean one should disregard the PSL’s quality like McCarthy has done.
When asked if he fancied a return to the Betway Premiership, McCarthy replied saying, “I’m not aiming [low] like help [Kaizer] Chiefs, [Orlando] Pirates or Sundowns. My ambitions are far beyond that.”
These are the PSL’s three biggest clubs, and frankly, one could make a case that he hasn’t proved himself enough to take the reins at either, nor do they want him.
There’s a possibility Jose Riveiro leaves after the 2024/25 season, which could be Benni McCarthy’s best chance at landing a top PSL job, but it seems he doesn’t value the role strong enough to wait around.
Where next?
So, if not the PSL, where?
America seems to be his next destination: “I’ve had three interviews with three different MLS clubs, so now their season is finished and they are just embarking on a final for the team to win the league; LA Galaxy and New York Red Bulls will be in the final [MLS Cup on Saturday].
“For the rest of the teams, they are now off-season, and the league has finished. I think teams now are assessing, they have interviewed coaches and, unfortunately, if someone loses his job they have candidates that are there.
“They were saying Benni is coming to Kaizer Chiefs, it was just rumours. I’ve not spoken to Sundowns. There has been no dialogue between me and the team. That’s firstly out of the way, and I think they’ve got coaches there that are experienced,” McCarthy concluded.
How many PSL clubs did McCarthy play for?
