Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal dazzled audiences on Sunday night. The two actors officially kicked off their Broadway run in Othello at the Barrymore Theatre in New York City.

The opening night of this modern revival of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy was a star-studded affair. Many Hollywood heavyweights and political figures graced the red carpet.

DENZEL WASHINGTON AS OTHELLO

Washington, 70, commands the stage as Othello. Othello is the Moorish general whose life unravels under the manipulative schemes of Iago, played by 44-year-old Gyllenhaal.

Directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon, this production breathes fresh life into the timeless tale of jealousy, betrayal, and tragedy.

Leon described Washington’s performance as transformative, according to ABC

“Denzel is an emperor—of the American stage and the world stage. He has met this role head-on, and Jake has met Denzel head-on.”

CELEBRITY GUESTS ON OPENING NIGHT

The opening night drew an impressive guest list. Former U.S. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden were spotted among the attendees, according to CBS.

Jennifer Lopez (accompanied by her child Emme), Nicole Scherzinger, Angela Bassett, and Spike Lee were also in attendance, to witness Denzel Washington.

Fashion icon Anna Wintour also made an appearance, posing with Colman Domingo, who is co-chairing the upcoming Met Gala.

Denzel Washington’s portrayal of Othellohas been lauded for its emotional depth and intensity. His ability to convey Othello’s descent into jealousy and rage left audiences spellbound.

Gyllenhaal’s Iago is equally captivating, embodying deceit with chilling precision, according to The Wrap.

This marks Gyllenhaal’s first Shakespearean role on Broadway—a challenge he embraced wholeheartedly. “I spent eight months really digging in because I’ve never done Shakespeare before,” he shared.

The production also features Molly Osborne as Desdemona, Othello’s ill-fated wife. Osborne’s heartfelt performance adds a poignant layer to the narrative.

Tickets for this limited 15-week run are in high demand, with prices converting to approximately R3,700 for premium seats.
