Defensive crisis for Orlando Pirates ahead of SuperSport clash

Orlando Pirates already had a long injury list to contend with but now there’s a key defender suspended for the Nedbank Cup quarters.

Sibisi suspended for Nedbank Cup last eight battle

After his yellow card for simulation against Chippa, Nkosinathi Sibisi has accumulated four bookings for the season and gains an automatic suspension. Sibisi had an eventful game as the eventual match-winner when he scored in first-half stoppage time. Tapelo Xoki is likely to come into the side against SuperSport, alongside impressive youngster Mbekezeli Mbokazi. Pirates will be grateful they have depth in central defence, although it will be tested to its limit by Gavin Hunt’s men.

Mbokazi’s time to shine

19-year-old central defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has been training with the senior side for some time, earning himself a first-team deal. The stylish left-footer has impressed Jose Riveiro and the technical team with his strong work ethic and cool, calm composure on the ball and crisp distribution over short and long distances. They also view him as a natural leader and a potential long-term partner for Thabiso Sesane in the heart of defence. His unique combination of rare traits and skills make him a prospect we’ll be watching closely. Mbokazi started for Pirates as they claimed a 1-0 win at Chippa on Wednesday. A clean sheet for the youngster on debut is an ideal start and his emergence comes at an opportune time with Sesane out for the season with a serious injury.
