A DA councillor’s assistant in Nelson Mandela Bay was arrested for allegedly selling fake jobs for R2,000.
Zanele Tyobeka, who works for Ward 5 councillor Sterri Stander, was arrested by the Hawks on Tuesday but released Thursday when her case wasn’t enrolled.
Hawks spokesman Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana confirmed Tyobeka’s arrest for fraud and corruption.
DA Eastern Cape chair Yusuf Cassim defended Stander saying she reported Tyobeka after learning about the scam.
“The accused confessed that she had allegedly abused her position to sell jobs to people to the tune of R2,000 per job opportunity. Ward 5 Cllr Terri Stander immediately placed her on suspension pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing,” Cassim said.
On Monday, angry job seekers allegedly kidnapped Tyobeka before she could go to police. She was returned safely on Tuesday.
EFF regional chair Khanya Ngqisha wants Stander to quit.
“History has taught us that when corruption of this nature is exposed, it is never just one person. The DA ward councillor must be investigated as this fraud and corruption took place under her watch.
“It is clear that the DA in Ward 5 is not to be trusted with state resources and furthermore, the silence of the DA on this matter of public importance is too loud,” he said.
The DA says there’s no proof linking Stander to the scheme.
