The Democratic Alliance has failed again to remove a council speaker in Gauteng.

This time, it was their attempt to get rid of Mncedi Ndzwanana, the Speaker of Tshwane council.

On Tuesday, 114 councillors voted to keep Ndzwanana in the job, while 82 wanted him gone. One councillor did not vote.

This is the third time in two days that the Democratic Alliance has lost a motion of no confidence in Gauteng.

Ndzwanana is a member of the African Transformation Movement and has been the Speaker for two years.

ActionSA, which is part of the ruling coalition in Tshwane, voted to keep Ndzwanana. This is even though they voted with the African National Congress to remove the speaker in Johannesburg the day before.

ActionSA’s Gauteng chairperson, Fundzi Ngobeni, said the Democratic Alliance was just trying to break up a coalition that is finally working. He said the city is doing better after years of problems.

But the Democratic Alliance’s Ofentse Madzebatela said Ndzwanana is unfair and acts like a dictator. “He treats councillors like they are his servants,” he said. “Other parties are not given a fair chance to speak in meetings.”

Ndzwanana said he always treats all councillors fairly, no matter which party they belong to.
