Connie Ferguson warns fans against scammers after being impersonated

Veteran actress Connie Ferguson has issued a strong warning to the public after nearly falling victim to a disturbing scam involving identity theft.

Taking to her Instagram, the Kings of Joburg star shared a detailed account of how scammers impersonated her, using a manipulated video call.

She posted a series of screenshots and a screen recording of the interaction, breaking down exactly how the scheme played out.

“Slide 1: I get a WhatsApp message and a missed video call from a ‘Connie Ferguson’,” she wrote, beginning the shocking thread.

However, her suspicions were confirmed when she looked up the number on Truecaller, which identified the account as belonging to someone named Madonsela, not her.

The so-called “Connie Ferguson” then attempted a video call, and the actress, already suspicious, cleverly recorded it using a second phone.

“Pardon the shoddy camera work. I wasn’t sure what to expect and I didn’t want them to see my face in case they drop off too quickly!” she explained.

After a few seconds on the call, the scammer ended the session and followed up with an eerie message: “You saw me right?”

Ferguson then revealed that the person had used a video from one of her old live workout sessions, something she had posted on her @iconniecfit fitness page during the COVID lockdown.

It had been repurposed to make the video call appear real and convincing.

In her caption, Connie didn’t hold back her frustration at how advanced and dangerous these scams have become.

“SCAMMERS ARE DOING THE MOST! Be vigilant! I DO NOT offer any investment opportunity business! Thieves are AI now to convince you that they are whoever they say they are!”

She urged her followers to be cautious, reminding them that real investment opportunities don’t come through random unsolicited calls, and that critical thinking should never be abandoned, even in tough times.

“If it’s too good to be true, it usually is! Have you never asked yourself why they are the ones that always have to call you and you can’t call them back? Don’t be manipulated into losing your common sense because times are hard,” she cautioned.
