Commission of Inquiry to investigate alleged SAPS corruption

President Cyril Ramaphosa says a Commission of Inquiry will investigate the allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

The investigation relates to the infiltration of law enforcement intelligence and associated institutions within the criminal justice system by criminal syndicates.

The South African Police Service (SAPS), the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), State Security Agency, the Judiciary and Magistracy, and the metropolitan police departments of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane will be under investigation.

MBUYISELI MADLANGA TO LEAD COMMISSION

The Commission will be headed by Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga. Advocate Sesi Baloyi SC and Advocate Sandile Khumalo SC will assist with the matter.

Ramaphosa said the Commission will have the power to refer matters for immediate criminal investigation and urgent decisions on prosecution.

COMMISSION EXPECTED TO DELIVER INTERIM REPORTS

Ramaphosa said the Commission will have to deliver interim reports within three to six months. He said it will have the power to refer matters for immediate criminal investigation and urgent decisions on prosecution.

The Commission will also investigate whether any members of the National Executive responsible for the criminal justice system were involved in corrupt practices.
