The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned the Western Cape and surrounding provinces that two cold fronts are set to strike between Monday, 19 May, and Wednesday, 21 May. The first cold front, described as “less intense,” will reach the western parts of the province on Monday, setting the stage for a much stronger cold front to follow on Tuesday.
“Persistent and continuous rainy conditions may lead to localised floods, particularly in areas with poor drainage and low-lying regions,” SAWS warned.
Furthermore, the agency also forecasts strong westerly to north-westerly winds ranging between 55 and 65 km/h across the Western, Northern, and Eastern Cape, especially inland.
Cold front: Snow, Rough Seas and Gale-Force Winds
Temperatures are expected to plummet as freezing levels drop across high-lying areas, making way for possible snowfall.
“These very cold conditions are expected to spread to the central and eastern parts of the country from Tuesday late evening, persisting until Friday morning, 23 May,” added SAWS.
The impact could be severe for coastal residents and maritime operators. Gale-force winds up to 75 km/h are expected along the coastline from Alexander Bay to Plettenberg Bay on Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing very rough sea conditions.
SAWS warns of possible abnormal waves reaching up to 7 metres on Wednesday, with a 10-second wave period. Also, these conditions pose a serious threat to small vessels and coastal activities.
Disruption to Daily Life Anticipated
Western Cape and Namakwa District residents should prepare for multiple disruptions.
Moreover, the strong winds could delay road travel and create hazards for high-sided vehicles along national routes. Power lines could also be affected.
Farmers and the public are advised to remain vigilant.
“Very cold conditions, heavy rainfall, snowfalls, strong to gale force winds and very rough seas can be expected,” cautioned SAWS in its initial advisory.
