The City of Cape Town has proposed a number of road infrastructure upgrades in the Muizenberg area, in an effort to increase the capacity of the local road network as well as improve public transport operations and active mobility.

According to the City’s Urban Mobility Directorate, the planned upgrades are part of the directorate’s Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan and Congestion Relief Programme.

Councillor for the directorate, Rob Quintas, said that all of these upgrades will also include facilities for pedestrians and cyclists to improve safety for them.

“We are proposing significant upgrades to assist with the traffic flow along Baden Powell Drive for those travelling to and from Muizenberg and along some of the roads that carry high volumes of traffic within Muizenberg itself. All of these upgrades include facilities for pedestrians and cyclists to improve the safety of these vulnerable road users.” Quintas revealed in a statement.

Quintas also urged local Muizenberg residents, road users, and other stakeholders to submit their comments by 2 June, as well as attend public information days in order to have their say on the matter.

Which Muizenberg roads will be affected?

According to the City, proposed improvements will be made along the following roads:

  • Royal Road from the intersection with Vlei Road to Prince George Drive
  • Baden Powell Drive from Prince George Drive to Sanderling Road
  • Vlei Road from the intersections with Royal Road to Alexander Road
  • Beach Road and Atlantic Road from Main Road to Royal Road
