Mkhulise’s contract with Sundowns is set to expire in June.

Kaizer Chiefs are said to be monitoring Sphelele Mkhulise’s situation at Mamelodi Sundowns as they look to add the talented midfielder to their squad ahead of the new season.

Mkhulise’s contract with Sundowns is set to expire in June, but the 29-year-old midfielder has an option of a one-year extension in his deal, which Sundowns are yet to exercise it.

According to a source, Mkhulise and the Sundowns management are locked in talks over a contract extension, but are not finding each other.

“The standing point is the length of his contract and the numbers. After they gave him the new offer, he submitted his counter offer and the club is still studying it,” said the source.

The source further added that Chiefs’ interest in Mkhulise has put the spanner in the works as far as the contract talks are concerned.

“Sundowns don’t want to lose Sphelele to their rivals, but at the same time they don’t want to keep an unhappy player. Sphelele is not happy with his lack of game time at Sundowns and wants some guarantees that he will play a certain number of games per season. But that depends on the new coach Miguel Cardoso so don’t be surprised if Sphelele ends up leaving Sundowns at the end of the season,” commented the source.

Mkhulise is a product of the Sundowns academy and was promoted to the senior team at the beginning of the 2018/19 season.
