Chiefs will take on Pirates in the Premiership on Saturday, and the sides will meet again the following Saturday in the Nedbank Cup final.

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi says Amakhosi still have a chance to rescue their season with two Soweto derbies against Orlando Pirates coming into focus.

Chiefs will take on Pirates in the Betway Premiership on Saturday at FNB Stadium, and the two sides will then meet again the following Saturday in the Nedbank Cup final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Pirates favourites to beat Chiefs

Pirates will be clear favourites to win both matches, with Chiefs enduring another terrible season in the Premiership.

Nabi’s side slumped to a 2-1 home defeat to Marumo Gallants on Saturday, their 11th league defeat of the campaign. Chiefs are currently ninth in the table and in serious danger of missing out on a place in the MTN8 for a second season in a row.

The Chiefs head coach was late to his post match press conference on Saturday after a lengthy team talk with his players.

“It is true we had a talk with the players,” said Nabi.

“After today’s game you could see the players’ heads are down and there is a lack of confidence.”

This was the sixth Premiership game in a row that Chiefs have failed to win.

“Sometimes you feel some (players) are giving up and I told them there is no time to blame anyone or to regret what happened. Today cannot come back, we have two very important games ahead of us and can still save our season,” added Nabi.

‘We need to stick together’

“There is the derby this weekend and then there is the final of the Nedbank. Everyone needs to assess himself with honesty and look at how he does at training and during games. We need to stick together and go into the coming week with our heads up.”

The Nedbank Cup is what really promises to save Chiefs’ season as they bid to avoid going a decade without a single piece of official Premier Soccer League silverware.

First, however, comes a Premiership game against Pirates that could give Chiefs a huge boost ahead of that final, as well as increasing their chances of scrambling into a top eight spot.
