Chidimma’s mother wants release, acquittal

Despite previously clapping back at “haters,” Miss Universe runner-up Chidimma Adetshina has decided to turn off the comments of all her social media posts. This comes in the wake of her mother, Anabela Rungo, being arrested and charged with identity theft.

According to the Department of Home Affairs, the Mozambican-born woman was taken into custody after failing to leave South Africa after both her ID and passport were revoked. The beauty queen’s young son was with her mother at the time of her arrest.

Like Anabela, Chidimma also had her documents seized amid an investigation by the department.

The arrest comes days after the model and law student allegedly bragged about visiting SA.

CHIDIMMA ADETSHINA’S MOTHER CLAIMS INNOCENCE IN IDENTITY FRAUD CHARGES

On Friday, 21 February, Chidimma Adetshina’s mother appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on charges related to violating the Immigration Act and Identification Act.

According to TshisaLive, Anabela Rungo has claimed her innocence. She stated that she had “no knowledge of being an undesirable or prohibited person.”

Anabela is accused of committing identity theft and fraudulently registering the birth of Chidimma as a South African.

The court heard how Anabela – who is married to Nigerian man Michael Adetshina – tried to apply for SA residency in 2016 – 15 years after giving birth to Chidimma in 2001.  Her bid was rejected due to financial reasons, and later, an appeal in which she presented fraudulent bank statements.

In a statement read in court, Chidimma’s mother claimed that she was the caregiver of the Miss Universe runner-up’s son, who she was raising in their Cape Town home.

She claimed that both herself and the little boy were ill, appealing to the court for her release and acquittal.

She wrote in an affidavit: “I should be released on bail as I am being charged with an offense for which I have not committed.”

After making headlines over the controversy last year, Chidimma has since acquired Nigerian citizenship through her father. After her stint at the Miss Universe pageant in December 2024, the 23-year-old has remained in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Chidimma has turned off the comments sections on her various social media accounts.

The model and law student had previously clapped back at critics who mocked her age, nationality, and quest to represent South Africa and the African continent.

“And you’re still broke,” she responded to one follower. In another, Chidimma claimed that she was the “queen of Africa.”
