Chidimma’s mother, Anabela Rungo, is in the spotlight again as she is facing charges of identity theft.
Rungo was arrested over the weekendin Summer Greens, Cape Town, after it was discovered that she had committed identity fraud to obtain citizenship.
CHIDIMMA’S MOTHER IDENTITY THEFT CASE CONTINUES
Anabela Rungo, the mother of Miss Nigeria 2024, is facing charges of identity theft. She appeared at the Cape Town Magistrates Court for a bail hearing on Friday.
According to Times LIVE, Immigration officer Adrian Jackson told the court that Rungo was arrested for violating immigration laws and the Identification Act.
This comes after she failed to respond to a notice in September 2024, which informed her that her ID number was being cancelled and gave her a chance to contest it.
Rungo fraudulently obtained the documents in 2001, and Home Affairs confirmed that she acquired them through identity theft. The court learned that she had falsely applied for an ID document under the name Sara Moyo.
Jackson stated she couldn’t be found, so letters about her ID withdrawal were sent to her through WhatsApp.
RUNGO SAYS SHE IS INNOCENT
According to TimesLive, Rungo maintained her innocence, stating, “I believe I am innocent and will be acquitted.
She also added: “My release would not undermine public peace.”
The court also heard that despite her documents being seized, she continued to travel outside of the country, presumably using a Mozambican passport.
HOW DID RUNGO’S CRIMES AFFECT CHIDIMMA?
Chidimma, a former Miss South Africa contestant, had to pull out of the competition in August last year. This comes after Home Affairs revealed that her mother might have been involved in “identity theft” to gain South African citizenship.
As a result, a South African woman whose identity could have been stolen was unable to register her child.
