The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that Miss Universe Nigeria and former Miss SA contestant Chidimma Adetshina’s mother, Anabela Rungo, has been detained.
Rungo was arrested on Saturday morning, 15 February, at a property in Cape Town, Western Cape.
CHIDIMMA ADETSHINA’S MOTHER TO BE HANDED OVER TO POLICE
Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza said the department withdrew Rungo’s South African documentation in September 2024 after finding that it had been fraudulently obtained, rendering her ineligible to continue residing in South Africa.
Ahead of the Miss SA pageant last year, the Department of Home Affairs said there were prima facie indications that the person registered as Adetshina’s mother may have committed fraud and identity theft. As a result, a South African woman whose identity may have been stolen could not register her child.
“Adetshina could not have participated in the alleged unlawful actions of her mother as she was an infant at the time when the activities took place in 2001,” the department clarified.
Qoza said in an apparent act of brazen disregard for the legal consequences of her conduct, it appears that Rungo has defied her “undesirable” status through her Mozambican passport.
“Investigations are ongoing into further potential misrepresentation and fraudulent conduct. During the operation on Saturday morning, investigators from the Counter Corruption and Immigration Services branches of the Department also found Adetshina’s under-aged child residing with Rungo.
“After being processed by Home Affairs over her apparent illegal continued residence in South Africa, Rungo will be handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS), as she is also the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation,’ Qoza explained.
In addition, the Department of Home Affairs is further liaising with the Department of Social Development and SAPS Child Protection Unit as it relates to protecting the interests of the under-age child.
“The Department will provide further updates at opportune moments. No interviews will be taken on this matter at this stage,” Qoza emphasised.

MISS UNIVERSE NIGERIA SPOTTED IN CAPE TOWN
Rungo’s arrest comes just days after her daughter was allegedly spotted in Cape Town.
According to a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Miss Universe runner-up was recently spotted in Cape Town.
In the video, the model could be seen enjoying a break with a few ladies in her company, which raised questions about how she managed to travel to the Mother City as her SA-issued travel documents were revoked.
