FARPost has established that the second-tier side Cape Town Spurs has parted ways with veteran midfielder Michael Morton.

Morton has been with Spurs since the beginning of the 2022/23 season before the club earned promotion to the top-flight.

He was one of the senior players, including Clayton Daniels and Nazeer Allie, who significantly contributed to the team’s successful campaign, culminating in a second-place finish and promotion through the PSL Promotional/Relegation Playoffs under the guidance of Shaun Bartlett.

During the playoffs, Morton featured in all four matches and notably scored in a match against Maritzburg United who were relegated that season.

Last season in the Premiership, he made 18 league appearances, starting 14 and coming off the bench four times.

The well-traveled midfielder’s contract with the Mother City-based club expired at the end of June this year. However, he extended it for one more year, delaying his retirement to help the club regain their top-flight status.

MORTON LEAVES SPURS DESPITE 7 MONTHS REMAINING IN CONTRACT

FARPost has been informed that the club has released the former Orlando Pirates man in spite of seven months remaining on his contract.

The 35-year-old has not been a regular starter during the first five months in the second tier, often starting matches on the bench. However, he was included in the starting line-up for the team’s most recent match, which ended in a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Orbit College.

Morton leaves the Urban Warriors amid a rough patch, as the team has struggled significantly at the start of the season.

Ernst Middendorp’s side has managed to win only two of their first ten league matches, drawing three and losing five, placing them in 13th position with a total of nine points.

Throughout his career, Morton has also played for Pirates, Cape Town All Stars, Maritzburg United, Cape Umoya United, AmaZulu FC, SuperSport United, and Bidvest Wits.
