Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has announced that Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) has received the prestigious Airport Experience Award at the Airport Honours Award ceremony last week. The award ceremony took place on 13 November 2024, during the International Airports Summit in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands.
What is this award for?
The aim of the Airport Experience Award is to recognise airports that provide their employees with a good working environment as a first step towards offering a good passenger experience.
Furthermore, this award celebrates airports that provide their staff with outstanding facilities, growth opportunities, and recognition programmes.
International Airport’s advisory board members formed the judging panel. They represent experts from across the global airport and aviation community.
Except for CTIA, the finalists for this year’s Airport Experience Award were GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. (India), Bahrain Airport Company (Kingdom of Bahrain), Alicante-Elche Airport (Spain), and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (US).
Last year’s winner of the award was Delhi International Airport in India.
ACSA proud of achievement
ACSA’s Regional General Manager Mark Maclean expressed his pride in Cape Town International Airport receiving this award stating, that the award ‘speaks to our core belief that a memorable passenger experience is driven by the people who work passionately to make each traveller feel welcome’. He added that the staff members at CTIA are creating ‘an airport experience that truly reflects a customer centric culture’.
Airports Company South Africa SOC Ltd (the Group) owns and operates South Africa’s nine principal airports, including three international gateways: O.R. Tambo International Airport, CTIA, and King Shaka International Airport. ACSA also participates in equity investments abroad and provides technical advisory and consultancy services to airports.
Major upgrades planned for Cape Town airport
Extensive renovations are planned for CTIA from 2026 to 2029 as part of ACSA’s R21.7 billion investment programme.
The upgrades will include the construction of a new runway, expansion of both domestic and international terminals, and additional aircraft contact stands. The airport will also receive enhanced security features including full-body scanners and expanded self-service boarding facilities.
