Businessman Sphamandla Mabonga among three dead at Solo Restaurant

Prominent businessman Sphamandla Mabonga has died following a shooting outside Solo Restaurant in Sandton on Thursday night, after previously facing serious charges in connection with a shooting at a nightclub in 2024.

According to Sunday World, the deceased man has been identified as Mabonga, a prominent businessman who was also known for his relationship with reality television star and businesswoman Londie London, real name Londiwe Siphiwokuhle Zulu.

Police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevuhulwi said a shooting incident occurred after the businessman allegedly clashed with the security detail at the restaurant.

Nevuhulwi said the businessman was denied entry because he allegedly had a gun on him which is prohibited at the restaurant.

“It is reported that a man with a firearm wanted to enter the restaurant which has a no firearm policy and that is when the altercation started, leading to a shooting between the man’s bodyguards and security,” Nevhuhulwi told the publication.

THE MAN DIED IN HOSPITAL

Two of the businessman’s bodyguards were declared dead on the scene while five other victims which include the businessman, two patrons at the restaurant, a CPF member and a security guard – were taken to hospital.

Nevhuhulwi said the police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder following the shooting.

Investigations into incidents that led to the shooting are currently underway.

OTHER SHOOTING INCIDENTS

According to the police, preliminary investigation revealed that the businessman who started the altercation had previously been arrested for a shooting incident also in Sandton last year.

In a report by IOL In March 2024, Mabonga was reportedly arrested following a shooting incident at Tempo nightclub in Sandton.

He was admitted at Mediclinic Morningside after he clashed with security at the club for denying him entry.

He was arrested in March and was charged with two counts of murder, one count of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of an unlicensed firearm, pointing of a firearm, and firing a firearm in a municipal area. 

The case is currently being investigated by the police at the Wynberg Police station.

NOT MY BOYFRIEND

Shortly after reports of Mabonga’s shooting at the nightclub, Londie London took to her X page to clarify that she had broken up with Mabonga.

The Real Housewives of Durban star had not commented on Friday following news of Mabonga’s passing.
