The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) reported that the body of a man who was reported missing in the surf zone at Sunrise Beach was found on Saturday morning.
NSRI RECEIVES REPORTS OF A BODY AT THE BEACH
At 07:56 on Saturday, 16 November, NSRI Strandfontein was alerted to reports of a bodystranded at the beach near Strandfontein. The South African Police Service (SAPS), City of Cape Town (CoCT) Law Enforcement Marine Unit, and lifeguards were summoned to the scene. The body has been identified by the man’s family and taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
TWO INCIDENTS ON THE SAME DAY?
EWNreports that the incident follows another case of a woman, mistaken to be the man, who might have gone missing in the surf zone at Sunrise Beach on the same day.
Nicolette Whitehead, NSRI Strandfontein station commander, said:
“At 11:44 on Monday, 11 November, the CoCT (City of Cape Town) water rescue etwork and NSRI Strandfontein duty crew were activated following an eyewitness report made to NSRI’s EOC (Emergency Operations Centre) of a female appearing to be in distress before disappearing underwater in the surf zone at Sunrise Beach, Muizenberg,” released by the nsri.org.
According to IOL, Gilbert, from Seawinds, was last seen on Monday, November 11, wearing a yellow T-shirt, black tracksuit pants, and slippers.
NSRI SEARCHES FOR VICTIM
Capetownetc mentioned that upon arrival at the scene, several eyewitnesses reported that they suspected the victim had disappeared underwater in the surf zone.
NSRI Strandfontein rescue swimmers entered the water and conducted free dive search efforts in an attempt to locate the victim.
They conducted search efforts in the surf zone and beyond.
POLICE OPEN AN INQUEST DOCKET
Capetownetc reports that the police have opened an inquest docket into the man’s death.
The police are calling for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
