Bittersweet! Springboks belt out final national anthem [video]

The Springboks – including captain Siya Kolisi – sang their heart out for the national anthem in their final test match of 2024 against Wales.

The boys in green and gold were joined by South Africans in the crowd, a Welsh choir, and a brass band.

The match took place at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

FINAL NATIONAL ANTHEM:  GOING OUT WITH A BANG

Springbok fans were undoubtedly emotional to watch the Springboks play their final game of 2024. And the same could be said for the national anthem, which has had South Africans scattered around the world beaming with pride and joy.

Joined by the Welsh brass band – the Regimental Band Corps of Drums of the Royal Welsh – the squad, including coach Rassie Erasmus, were seen singing along to Nkosi Sikelel ‘iAfrika.

Springbok captain Siya sang his heart out while newbie Cameron Hanekom was visibly overcome with emotion. Brothers Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse – playing together for the first time – also stood arm-in-arm.

The national anthem was jazzed up by the band, given the grand finality of the test series.

WHEN WILL THE SPRINGBOKS PLAY AGAIN?

Springbok fans will have to wait a while to see the national squad in action or sing the national anthem at a test match.

The players will take a well-deserved break after a successful test match series in 2024.

According to SA Rugby, the squad will reunite to play two test matches against Italy in July 2025. The test series will take place in SA.

PlanetRugby reports that South Africa will face Australia in back-to-back home tests next year, take on New Zealand in two away Tests, and play Argentina at home and away.

The dates have yet to be confirmed.
