Papa Penny – real name Eric Kulani Giyani Nkovani – brought his flashy “Shangaan Disco King” look to the State of the Nation (SONA) red carpet.
All eyes were on the singer and reality TV star-turned-MK Party MP, who wore a gold ensemble he claimed was inspired by the rich South African mineral resources.
PAPA PENNY’S SONA LOOK EXPLAINED
Like many politicians, Papa Penny dressed for the occasion on the SONA red carpet. The entertainer, now an MK Party MP, wore a navy blue suit with gold trimmings. He paired the bold look with shiny gold shoes.
The newly-fledged party member also wore a flashy gold chain and several gold rings.
Speaking to EWN,he explained his look: “I’m always dressed to kill. When you see me like this, I’m Penny Penny.
“I’m an African who owns the minerals and who shines like gold. The Western said the Africans must wear animal skins. I’m not an animal; I’m an African who owns the minerals, what God gives us”.
Papa Penny added that he was the “best dressed” on the SONA red carpet.
MK PARTY MEMBERS OPT FOR MILITARY REGALIA
While Papa Penny certainly stood out of the crowd at SONA, fellow MK Party members attempted to camouflage themselves in military regalia.
In the absence of their leader, Jacob Zuma, the party entered the Cape Town City Hall singing Apartheid struggle songs. The party sat beside EFF members, who are known for wearing bright red overalls.
The MK Party takes its name from uMkhonto weSizwe, the military wing of the ANC.
