Orlando Pirates supporters will forever remember Senzo Meyiwa. The late Buccaneer would have turned 38 years old today, but he was sadly shot dead in Vosloorus 11 years ago.

To remember his career, we found one of the most special memories from his time at the Sea Robbers. One of the club’s greatest legends, Lucky Lekgwathi, once gave a radio interview in which he shared how Benni McCarthy inspired Meyiwa to improve before he became Orlando Pirates’ number one goalkeeper.
According to Lekhwathi, McCarthy would ask Meyiwa to stay behind after training for extra sessions. This was where the late goalkeeper would have opportunities to earn R1 000 for saving penalty kicks from McCarthy. “They used to stay behind together. Benni used to practise penalties with Senzo. He would tell Senzo that he will take five penalties. He told Senzo that if he would save one, he would give him R1 000,” Lekgwathi said on Robert Marawa’s SportsWorldWide show.
“The bar would save him, Benni would give him R1 000. It was a way to motivate him. After that, he became a good goalkeeper. I was not surprised to see him become the captain of Orlando Pirates and playing for Bafana Bafana. I was always saying ‘Senzo you must say thanks to Benni McCarthy,” the player that was known as “Phinda Mzala” concluded.
In the meantime, the murder trial for Meyiwa is still continuing over a decade later. The new lawyer for accused one, Muzi Sibiya, has requested more time to prepare for cross-examination of the lead investigator.
