The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has rejected claims that its provincial spokesperson Fanle Sibisi is getting two salaries, one from the party and another from Richmond local Municipality near Pietermaritzburg.

The office of Provincial Coordinator Mike Mabuyakhulu said in a statement the reports were nothing more than lies.

“Cadre Fanle Sibisi is not employed by the ANC. The role of spokesperson is unpaid and Sibisi performs this duty voluntarily. Historically, ANC spokespersons have supported themselves through other means, including serving as public representatives,” said Mabuyakhulu.

He said Sibisi is already in talks with both the municipality and the ANC to find the best arrangement that respects his right to political association.

Sibisi was appointed ANC provincial spokesperson last month after Secretary General Fikile Mbalula announced a leadership reshuffle in KwaZulu-Natal.

On 25 February, former spokesperson Mafika Mndebele resigned to make way for Sibisi.

Sources say residents in Richmond, where support for the ANC is under threat from the MK Party, are furious that Sibisi is still being paid a full-time salary as Director of Community Services while working as ANC spokesperson.

The council is expected to meet on 27 March to discuss his future, since he holds a section 56 management post.
