- ANC brings back former leaders Mike Mabuyakhulu and Nomusa Dube-Ncube to help rebuild the party after losing KZN in elections.
- Provincial Secretary Bheki Mtolo was removed as the party tries to fix its problems in KwaZulu-Natal.
The ANC has turned to its former leaders who were pushed aside to help rebuild the party in KwaZulu-Natal after its crushing election defeat.
ANC Deputy Secretary General Nomvula Mokonyane met with KZN leaders at Seme House in Durban on Tuesday to tell them about changes to the leadership.
Provincial Secretary Bheki Mtolo was removed, making way for Mike Mabuyakhulu and Nomusa Dube-Ncube to join the new team alongside veteran politician Jeff Radebe.
Mabuyakhulu will be the coordinator while Dube-Ncube is expected to be his deputy.
Both leaders had a rough time under Mtolo and former Chairperson Siboniso Duma’s leadership, known as the Taliban.
In 2022, Dube-Ncube’s dream of becoming KZN’s first woman ANC leader was crushed at the party’s conference. As premier, she faced bullying from Mtolo and Duma.Â
She was later pushed down to number 31 on the party list, ending her chances of staying premier.
Mabuyakhulu tried to help the ANC in KZN with Dr Zweli Mkhize in 2023, but the old leadership kept him away from making decisions.
The ANC lost control of KZN in the May 29 elections for the first time since 2004, when Mabuyakhulu, Dr Sbu Ndebele, Dr Zweli Mkhize and Dumisani Makhaye led the party to victory.
Mtolo told reporters on Tuesday that despite being removed, he remains part of the ANC.
ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula will visit KZN to announce more members of the new leadership team.
Both Mabuyakhulu and Dube-Ncube previously led the Department of Cooperative Governance, working closely with traditional leaders and the Zulu royal family.Â
This helped the ANC win support in IFP strongholds in northern KZN, including working with traditional leaders like the late Inkosi of Zashuke Nyanga Ngubane.
