Captain reacts to claims of copying the late Mampintsha

Rising Afrotainment artist Captain has spoken out following growing whispers accusing him of trying to imitate the late gqom legend Mampintsha.

The singer, who’s been making waves with tracks like Cinderella and Senze Njani, addressed the controversy during a recent interview, clearing the air about his musical identity and influences.

Captain, whose real name is Sphamandla Mathebula, appeared on Gagasi FM’s Urban Top 40 with Heazy Madida, where he made it clear he has no intention of becoming a replica of the late Big Nuz member.

“I look up to Mampintsha. I learned a lot from him and, believe it or not, he learned a lot from me,” Captain explained.

He acknowledged the comparisons but dismissed the impersonation claims, saying, “I am not going to go into it because a lot of things have been said. I don’t have a problem with everything that has been said because it’s someone else’s opinion, and I don’t have the right to deny that.”

Firmly distancing himself from the idea of emulating Mampintsha’s persona, he added, “I will never act like Mampintsha. I will never be him. He taught me a lot of things, and I had to be taught for me to be ready to sing.”

Since Mampintsha’s untimely passing in December 2022 following a stroke, fans have remained protective of his legacy.
