AfriForum to approach UN over ‘Kill the Boer’ song

Afrikaner lobby groups, AfriForum, are looking to approach the United Nations (UN) in their latest bid to have the controversial struggle song “Kill The Boer” declared hate speech.

On Thursday, the Constitutional Court dismissed AfriForum‘s attempt to appeal the Supreme Court of Appeal’s ruling, which stated that the chant “Kill the Boer” is not considered hate speech. AfriForum and affiliated groups claim that the chanting of the struggle song is provocative.

Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel said the “Kill the Boer” song infringes on Afrikaners’ dignity. He also accused judges of using personal ideologies to interpret the Constitution.

“We are seeing a growing number of judges that are ideologically driven and that, of course, has huge implications because with the political transition in 1994, the indication was given that the constitution and constitutional court would give protection to human rights and those human rights will include those of Afrikaners. With a shocking judgement like this, this seem no longer the case,” he said.

AfriForum unhappy with “Kill the Boer” judgement

Kriel said the song reduced Afrikaners to “second-class citizens” in the country of their birth.

“It doesn’t matter what the intention of the song is, it infringes on the dignity of the people, it frightens children. If children hear they could be killed because they don’t understand correctly. This court has showed disrespect for the dignity of Afrikaners and farmers and we won’t take that lying down.

“We will take this internationally, including the United Nations (UN),” said the AfriForum CEO.

On Thursday, Julius Malemacelebrated his victory against AfriForum, vowed to continue singing the song “Kill the Boer”.

Are the courts captured?
