AfriForum says MK Party’s ‘absurd’ treason case has no grounds

Afrikaner lobby group AfriForum says any investigation will confirm that there are no grounds for the false allegations of treason they are being accused of, after the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party opened a case against the group.

The MK Party has accused the lobby group of treason after US President Donald Trumpcut aid funding to South Africa on assertions that the country was “confiscating” land via the Expropriation Act. Additionally, Trump offered to take in Afrikaners “who are under attack in South Africa” as refugees in the US.

AFRIFORUM RESPONDS TO TREASON CASE OPENED BY MK PARTY

On Monday, 10 February, the MK Party opened a case against AfriForum in Cape Town.

After opening the case, the party’s deputy president John Hlophe told journalists that they vehemently condemn the treasonous actions of AfriForum which have deliberately lobbied foreign powers to act against the sovereignty and economic interests of South Africa.

This betrayal was nothing less than an act of economic sabotage, a direct assault on our nation’s independence, and a dangerous attempt to undermine the will of the people,” Hlophe said.

AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel said the charges are “absurd” and will not cause sleepless nights.

Kriel said it is the duty of civil society and organisations such as AfriForum to shine a light on legislation and actions that threaten the welfare of citizens and the country.

“We cannot keep quiet about the injustice being committed at the expense of South Africa, its citizens, and the South African economy. False allegations that AfriForum has spread ‘misleading information’ about the Expropriation Act and that this is the reason for the USA’s action against South Africa are blatant lies,” Kriel said.

Kriel said AfriForum has constantly put the facts, as contained in the Expropriation Act signed by President Cyril Ramaphosa himself, in the spotlight.

“This was done in the interest of the country and its citizens to point out the dangers that the act poses for private property rights and the risks that especially Section 12(3) of the act poses [The section of the act provides for nil compensation in specific cases of land expropriation],” Kriel emphasised.

LOBBY GROUP BLAMES ANC

Following Trump’s statement about cutting aid funding to South Africa, the lobby group said Ramaphosa and the leadership of the ANC must bear the full blame.

AfriForum has once again pinned the “ANC’s reckless and radical domestic and foreign policies” as the real reason for the unstable relations with the USA and the USA’s recent actions against South Africa.

Kriel said the former ruling party’s action against the interests of the citizens of the country is evident in, among other things, state capture and other corruption as already pointed out by the Zondo Commission and the failure of the criminal justice system to act accordingly against individuals who are responsible for state capture and other transgressions.

“It is moreover hypocritical and ironic that it is Jacob Zuma, the leader of the MK Party, who, in his time as President of the country, was responsible for state capture, is now the leader of the party to bring in a charge of treason against AfriForum,” he said.
