Lobby group AfriForum has called for international sanctions against Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema over the ‘Kill the Boer’ chant.
The calls comes just days after the Constitutional Court dismissed the group’s bid to appeal a ruling by the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) that the struggle song does not constitute hate speech.
WHY DOES AFRIFORUM WANT SANCTIONS AGAINST JULIUS MALEMA?
In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), AfriForum leader Kallie Kriel shared that the lobby group has started with a process to request governments internationally to take punitive actions against Malema and those who make themselves guilty of human rights violations by chanting Kill the Boer.
Kriel said they are also requesting governments to use diplomatic channels to request the South African government to condemn the calls for the murder of Afrikaners and farmers unconditionally.
“This international action is needed of course because the South African Constitutional Court found that the country’s Constitution does not protect Afrikaners and farmers against these calls for violence against them.
“In this campaign, we will also spread a dossier that has been drawn by our legal team. This dossier would show how Julius Malema and his colleagues abuse human rights, secondly, how they openly support terror organisations, and thirdly that they are accused of very serious cases of corruption,” Kriel said.
CONSTITUTIONAL COURT UPHOLDS PREVIOUS RULINGS ON ‘KILL THE BOER’ CHANT
Following the ConCourt ruling, the EFF said the highest court in the land has confirmed what they have said all along: the AfriForum case was a frivolous and cynical attempt to weaponise the legal system to distort history and silence Black resistance.
The party said AfriForum, has repeatedly pushed the false narrative of white victimhood in a country where Black people continue to suffer the legacy of land dispossession, economic exclusion, and systemic
oppression at the hands of white minority rule.
“Their efforts to criminalise a liberation song, one deeply rooted in the fight against the brutal regime that oppressed Black people for decades, are part of their broader project to rewrite history, erase their own crimes, and paint themselves as victims,” the party said.
‘AN INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL’
In February, tech-billionaire Elon Musk also called for Malema to be declared an international criminal and also took to X to question why President Cyril Ramaphosa had not taken action against Malema “for calling for the genocide of white people”.
In another post, Musk called for sanctions against Malema and for the firebrand politician to be declared an international criminal.
