  • ActionSA Ekurhuleni leaders will be removed after R200,000 in party funds disappeared under their watch.
  • Former member claims leaders falsely said they spent R38,000 on an event he paid for himself.

ActionSA in Ekurhuleni will choose new leaders after R200,000 went missing under the current leadership.

Caucus leader Siyanda Makhubo and whip Claries de Lange claim they spent the money on election campaign events, but others say they can’t prove this.

The party will hold new elections on 7 March after both the Ekurhuleni Caucus and Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) backed a mid-term review on 30 January.

Provincial secretary Evelyn Mondlana said in an email seen by Scrolla.Africa that party rules allow for new leaders to be chosen after two and a half years.

“As per the party’s Rule 13.1 of the caucus rules, the term of office for caucus leaders is set for 2.5 years whereby a mid-election will take place by members of the caucus,” she said.

Former party member Teacher Maluleka claims the pair lied about spending R38,000 on an event he organised for party president Herman Mashaba.

“The event took place without ActionSA caucus contribution, I paid for everything but financial statements point out that they made payments to events,” he said.

The party’s highest body, the Senate, will make the final decision on what happens next.

Makhubo denies doing anything wrong and says people are trying to destroy his reputation.

“There are no such charges, internal investigations didn’t find any mismanagement of funds including the PEC. The PEC has written to the Senate to inform them of the findings,” he said.
