A 44-year-old foreign national has been arrested at the Beitbridge Port of Entry while attempting to smuggle illicit cigarettes worth over R14 million into Zimbabwe, according to the South African Police Services.
The arrest occurred on Saturday, 18 January 2025, when police stopped the suspect, who was driving a white truck with a tanker trailer. Initially, the driver claimed the tanker was empty. However, police grew suspicious and directed the vehicle to the ramp zone for inspection.
Hidden Cigarettes Uncovered
Upon searching the tanker, officers discovered it was fully loaded with 710 boxes of illicit Remington Gold cigarettes. The suspect failed to provide a credible explanation for the origin of the goods and was promptly arrested.
In addition to the contraband cigarettes, police also seized the truck tanker, which is valued at R2.5 million.
Police Applaud Vigilance
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, commended the officers involved in the operation.
Hadebe said that the successful interception at the border sent a clear message to smugglers, emphasizing that the officers’ vigilance and commitment had delivered a significant blow to the illicit trade.
Cigarette Smuggler Facing Court Appearance
The suspect is set to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of smuggling illicit cigarettes. This case highlights the ongoing battle against illegal trade at South Africa’s borders. Police investigations are continuing as authorities work to dismantle smuggling networks operating in the region.
