While winter might signal hibernation for some, it’s also a great time to head off the beaten path and explore South Africa’s quieter corners.
The Eastern Cape offers a diverse mix of experiences, spanning wildlife, history, coffee, wine and dramatic coastlines.

1. Lalibela Wildlife Reserve
Winter in the bush is ideal for game viewing. At Lalibela, near Grahamstown, cooler weather clears the air and thins the vegetation, making it easier to spot animals. This season, six rare cheetah cubs were born.

5. Gamtoos Valley
In September, Mooihoek Strawberry Farm in the Gamtoos Valley lets visitors pick their own strawberries. They also sell dried fruit mixes, ideal for gifts or travel snacks.
6. Storms River
At the Storms River Petroport, grab some top-quality biltong at the Village Pantry and take in the dramatic views from the bridge over the gorge.
7. Plett Winelands
Before reaching Plettenberg Bay, turn off to The Crags to explore South Africa’s smallest wine region. Book a tasting at Newstead Lund Family Vineyards, known for award-winning Cap Classique.
8. Plettenberg Bay
