Kaizer Chiefs are preparing for a busy January transfer window as ambitious targets are identified.
With the January transfer window just over a month away, Kaizer Chiefs are already laying the groundwork to strengthen their squad. Despite sitting in eighth place on the Betway Premiership table after five matches, the club’s ambitions are clear under coach Nasreddine Nabi, who is focused on building a long-term project. While it’s still early in the season, Chiefs are actively identifying areas to improve and targeting key players for the upcoming window.
A reliable source has confirmed that Chiefs are already pinpointing positions to reinforce, with particular attention on the midfield and attack. The club is reportedly targeting Stellenbosch FC midfielder Sihle Nduli, although the Winelands-based side is known for being difficult negotiators. Chiefs are also keen on Mamelodi Sundowns’ Sphelele Mkhulise, especially with the playmaker entering the final six months of his contract after the festive season. Mkhulise could be available on a free transfer, making him an attractive target for Chiefs.
Chiefs search for midfield experience
With Edson Castillo and Sibongiseni Mthethwa both over 30, Chiefs are looking for an experienced midfielder to partner with promising 22-year-old Samkelo Zwane. The club has reportedly expressed strong interest in Azam FC’s Feisal Salum, a versatile midfielder also reportedly on Sundowns’ radar. Salum, who played under Nabi at Young Africans, could be a strong addition, but his three-year contract with Azam FC and the club’s reluctance to sell in January make a transfer unlikely this window. Chiefs will need to act quickly if they want to secure this potential signing.
One of Chiefs’ biggest concerns remains their striker position. Ranga Chivaviro is currently the club’s only out-and-out number nine. And coach Nabi has made it clear that the team needs another striker. Finding a quality striker in January will be a challenge, as most clubs are typically unwilling to sell during the middle of the season.
Chiefs must avoid past mistakes in January
Kaizer Chiefs are determined not to repeat the mistakes of previous seasons. Where failing to strengthen the squad in January left them vulnerable. Under former coach Cavin Johnson, Chiefs failed to address glaring deficiencies in the team. While rivals Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns made key signings that strengthened their squads.
Can they secure their targets in the competitive market?
With the January transfer window quickly approaching, Chiefs face a challenging market. While clubs are generally reluctant to sell key players mid-season, Amakhosi must act decisively to secure the players they need. Nabi’s long-term vision requires immediate reinforcement.
