UMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party head of presidency Magasela Mzobe has assured members that the party will govern KwaZulu-Natal as it received the highest number of votes in the province in the national and provincial elections held earlier this year.
Party leader Jacob Zuma is expected to deliver the keynote address when the party hosts its first anniversary celebration at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban next month.
The party was officially launched on 16 December 2023 in Gauteng, when its current leader, Jacob Zuma, endorsed it for the national and provincial elections on 29 May.
Newly appointed secretary-general Floyd Shivambu said they chose to celebrate their first anniversary in the eThekwini because the party received the most votes in the 29 May elections from the region.
Shivambu said more than 600 000 people in the eThekwini metro municipality voted for the Zuma-led party, which emerged as the third-biggest political party, having received over two million votes overall.
“So, we invite people of KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa, ground forces of the MK Party, to come in their numbers to celebrate and mark the first anniversary of uMkhonto weSizwe, which will take place on Sunday, 15 December,” Shivambu said.
The former MK Party national organiser said religious and traditional leaders are among the dignitaries the party plans to invite to mark the occasion.
