Durban – The National Freedom Party has expelled its secretary general after finding him guilty of misconduct. Teddy Thwala was expelled from the NFP after a disciplinary committee meeting on Sunday in Durban. He has been at odds with NFP President Ivan Barnes since both won posts at the NFP elective conference. At that gathering, Thwala was in the camp of eThekwini Deputy Mayor Zandile Myeni, who was defeated by Barnes. In a statement the NFP released on Tuesday, the party says it has expelled Thwala with immediate effect.
Harry Gwala– The South Africa National Civic Organisation (Sanco) has buried the hatchet with the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal. This comes after Sanco’s provincial leadership decided to deploy its KZN chairperson, Lawrence Dube, to an ANC event at the Harry Gwala District over the weekend. This raised eyebrows since the Sanco leadership had written a “divorce letter” to the ANC in KZN, claiming that the relationship was fake and full of problems. On Tuesday Sanco said that they have reconciled with the ANC after the intervention of ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula over the weekend.
Umkhanyakude – Traditional leaders, together with the KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, led a tour to check progress on the reconstruction of the Jersey barriers being built on the South African/Mozambique border to curb cross-border crime. Traditional leaders of the Tembe and Gumede clans said they were very impressed with the work done so far and happy about efforts to curb the illegal movement of stolen vehicles across the border to Mozambique. Duma said about R62-million has been spent on Phase 1 and work will continue on Phase 2. Later, Duma and Umkhanyakude district Mayor Siphile Mdaka visited Nkovukeni island to address the plight of the people who are unable to access services due to the river that surrounds the area.
Empangeni – Three firearms were seized and a suspect arrested in the early hours of Tuesday during an operation conducted by the Provincial Operational Response Services, Public Order Policing, Empangeni and Crime Intelligence officers. In Dondotha a 30-year-old suspect was arrested after he was found in possession of a firearm with 14 rounds of ammunition. Investigations revealed that the firearm belongs to the police service and was not issued to any officer. There are no records indicating that the firearm was reported missing or stolen. The operation continued to a Dondotha homestead where a firearm with 15 rounds of ammunition was found wrapped in a T-shirt and hidden on a couch inside an unlocked room. The firearm, licensed to a 38-year-old man, was seized for reasons of non-compliance with the Firearms Control Act.
