Residents at the Broadwalk Urban Village in Midrand have sought safety somewhere else after fire destroyed the complex on Tuesday night.
Firefighters from the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call by 9 PM.
Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg EMS said, “The blaze, which originated on the second floor, affected approximately 130 apartments.”
Some residents who sustained injuries while trying to escape the fire have been taken to the nearest health facility.
On Wednesday morning, Xolile Khumalo said the inferno had been extinguished.
“The residential complex is located on Broadwalk Street in Midrand, about one kilometre from the Gautrain station. The majority of residents were evacuated safely,” said Khumalo.
“The cause of fire will be investigated as soon as fire fighting operations are completed. The city is in talks with the owner of the complex regarding accommodation arrangements,” she added.
