Motorists face mixed fuel price adjustments in December

The Automobile Association (AA) has warned motorists to brace for fluctuating fuel prices in December. The latest data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) suggest a slight decrease in petrol prices but a significant rise in diesel costs.

Petrol prices are set to drop slightly

According to the AA’s forecast, motorists can expect marginal relief at the petrol pump. Unleaded Petrol (ULP) 95 may decrease by about five cents per litre, while ULP93 could drop by approximately 16 cents per litre.

Jacaranda FM News reported AA spokesperson Eleanor Mavimbela highlighted this positive trend but cautioned against celebrating too soon.

“International petrol prices have been declining steadily, leading to these expected reductions in December,” Mavimbela stated.

However, she noted that the weakening of the rand against the US dollar following the recent American presidential elections has limited the potential for larger cuts.

Diesel and paraffin prices to climb

While petrol users may see minor savings, diesel and illuminating paraffin users will face increased costs. Diesel prices are expected to rise by 38 to 40 cents per litre, while illuminating paraffin could go up by 39 cents per litre.

“The continued rise in diesel prices remains a concern, especially for industries that rely heavily on it,” said Mavimbela.

“These increases are a direct result of global market trends and the weakened rand.”

The AA advises consumers to plan accordingly, as diesel price hikes could impact the cost of goods and services, especially during the festive season.

Prepare for holiday travel

With the holiday season fast approaching, Mavimbela urged motorists to budget carefully and prioritise vehicle maintenance.

“Planning for long journeys in December and January should start now. Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy and ready for extended trips,” she said.
