Today’s Kaizer Chiefs news wrap focuses on the future of legendary ‘keeper Itumeleng Khune and updates on the Bongani Zungu rumours.

Khune’s Golden Years with Kaizer Chiefs

Itumeleng Issac Khune was the rare honour of being a one-club man. Famous around the world for his sensational distribution of a football, he’s also displayed superb shot-stopping abilities for club and country down the years. Khune made his PSL debut for Amakhosi against Jomo Cosmos in August 2007. In the 17 years that have elapsed, he has scooped seven major honours with the Glamour Boys, including three Betway Premiership crowns in 2005, 2013 and 2015 and amassed 347 appearances. This guy was also PSL Footballer of the Year in 2013. Say what you will, but Khune is a bona fide Amakhosi legend. He’s also got 91 Bafana caps.Â

Khune has hinted that he might still play more football in the Betway Premiership though…

How much was Khune earning?

The 37-year-old stopper was reportedly the second-highest earner at the club before he and Keagan Dolly’s contracts could down. Dolly topped the list with an alleged R1.4 million a month, while Khune’s packet was around R480k a month. That’s not the full story though.

Zungu to Kaizer Chiefs is highly unlikely

Experienced deep-lying playmaker Bongani Zungu is a free agent after being released by South African champions Sundowns. The 31-year-old had a trial at Rulani Mokwena’s Wydad AC in Morocco but nothing panned out. Zungu, aka Ben10, hasn’t kicked a competitive ball in anger since May 2024 so there are concerns around his fitness. According to FARPost, Kaizer Chiefs have zero interest in signing the former Vitoria Guimaraes, Amiens and Rangers midfielder. He joined Sundowns in 2022 after his six-year European stint.

Chiefs currently have on-loan Njabulo Blom, Sibongiseni Mthethwa and youngster Samkelo Zwane as their defensive midfield options. However, according to SoccerLaduma, Amakhosi are closely following Puso Dithejane’s performance with TS Galaxy. The former academy product from Naturena has thrived in the number 10 role for Sead Ramovic’s side since his acrimonious departure from Naturena.
