Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen has defended his decision to ride in a Toyota Corolla, while others in cabinet prefer multi-million rand luxury cars.
The Democratic Alliance leader – who previously confessed to purchasing his clothes from Pep Stores – has also shunned VIP “blue light brigades.”
JOHN STEENHUISEN ON CHOOSING A TOYOTA COROLLA
In a clip posted on social media, a journalist questions John Steenhuisen about why he chose to ride in a Toyota Corolla Cross instead of a luxury car.
The Minister was being chauffeured to a meeting of the national executive council in Limpopo on Friday, 1 November.
The journo said: “People are driving black, German-made cars. You are driving a Toyota Corolla. Why are you subjecting yourself to modesty?
John answered, “It’s a cost-saving mechanism. More money will be spent on citizens and not on politicians.”
PAYING FOR OWN LIGHTS AND WATER TOO
According to DA Federal Chair Helen Zille, she hoped that DA ministers in cabinet – including John Steenhuisen would not follow in the footsteps of those before them.
Speaking to Clement Manyathela on 702, she said, “We have zero tolerance for corruption; we won’t tolerate that anywhere. We are very committed to clean, good governance and efficiency.”
Zille was also confident that DA ministers would reject unnecessary expenditure afforded to them.
She continued, “I certainly hope they won’t take the full benefits of the ministerial handbook, as that is absolutely absurd. I hope they will pay for their own lights and water. I hope they won’t take two ministerial residences, one in Tshwane and one in Cape Town.”
She added, “I hope they won’t go running around in blue-light brigades because that has certainly been our policy.”
