Bryanston – Jacob Zuma has insisted that his appeal against his expulsion from the ANC be heard in person on Friday, 1 November. In July, the ANC national disciplinary committee found its former president guilty of misconduct and expelled him. The ANC intends to hold the appeal virtually, citing safety concerns over potential large gatherings of Zuma supporters. The JG Zuma Foundation said that Zuma had instructed his representative, Tony Yengeni, to prioritise his request for a physical hearing.
Durban –Members of the Durban Long Distance Taxi Association are in a standoff with the provincial government and police, resulting in protests that have brought parts of the city to a standstill. MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, left a meeting in Johannesburg to return to KZN to address the situation. Taxi owners, who say their permit issues remain unresolved, are refusing to transport passengers in some areas, including Nongoma, where the local economy is suffering as residents cannot travel to town. They have called on the KZN government to create centralised offices in rural areas for permit applications to prevent their taxis from being impounded.
Durban –AHome Affairs official and two accomplices who arranged illegal marriages at a secret “office” in the city have been arrested. The gang reportedly used South African women’s identity documents to marry them off to undocumented foreign nationals so that these “husbands” could gain South African citizenship. Several documents and electronic devices were seized, and more arrests are expected as investigations continue. Three suspects are involved so far: two men face fraud charges, while a woman is charged with obstructing justice for attempting to destroy evidence. They were set to appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 30 October.
Hillcrest –KZNPolice officers took a break from their duties to participate in the SAPS Golf Charity Tournament aimed at raising money for the children of officers who died on duty. KZN Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, along with top officials like Lieutenant-General Lineo Nkhoua, showed off their skills at the event, which was held at the Cotswold Downs Golf Estate in Hillcrest, Durban, on Thursday. The event supports the South African Police Service Education Trust. The trust helps fund the education of slain police officers’ children from primary school through to their first tertiary qualification.
