Thembisa Mdoda-Nxumalo brings dignity to grieving families on ‘Icebo Labantu’
Thembisa Mdoda-Nxumalo is embracing what she describes as her calling as she is set to offer support to families grieving.
The seasoned presenter is the face of Icebo Labantu, a powerful new reality show coming to SABC 1 that offers support to underprivileged families as they navigate the painful journey of loss.
Premiering on 6 July 2025 at 17:30, the show follows real South African families facing the unimaginable: having to bury loved ones without the means to do so.
In partnership with the Icebolethu Group, Icebo Labantu steps in to ensure these individuals are laid to rest with the respect and dignity they deserve.
“This is a real-life mission. We are creating a space where dignity, empathy, and humanity come first,” said Mdoda-Nxumalo.
The debut episode tells the tragic story of Xoli Mpanza, a young woman who was reported missing and later found murdered, with her toddler’s cries ultimately leading to the heartbreaking discovery.
The show documents her family’s grief and the support they receive through the funeral assistance initiative.
On 13 July, viewers will meet Khanyisile, a mother who lost her partner and unborn child, and now faces separation from her teenage son.
Her episode explores not just her pain, but her resilience in the face of overwhelming loss.
Later, on 20 July, the series shines a light on Gogo Kibi, a woman who died alone and was nearly denied a proper burial after a funeral service reportedly refused to assist.
It was the Vaal community that came together to give her the farewell she deserved.
Icebo Labantu is not just a show, it promises to be a platform for healing, humanity, and hope.
There are people in this country who still haven’t been able to bury their loved ones. Some, since as far back as COVID. When I realised people couldn’t even afford to bury their own… I was saddened. I stopped. Then I created. @icebolabantu
