Eastern Cape man shot dead behind pavilion during rugby match

Gunmen shot and killed a 48-year-old man behind the pavilion at Derrick Ferreira Stadium in Kariega on Saturday, 21 June.

The victim died on the scene while the rugby match continued on the field.

According to a SAPS media statement, gunshots rang out around 18:10 on Seagull Drive in Kariega, shocking spectators. The victim sustained fatal wounds to his neck and chest.

He collapsed behind the stands, and paramedics declared him dead on the scene.

Police confirmed the shooting and have opened a murder docket. The case is under investigation by the Kamesh branch of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Authorities have yet to determine a motive or identify suspects. SAPS has urged anyone with information to come forward as detectives intensify efforts to track the perpetrator.

A fatal shooting at a shopping centre in Philippi East claimed the life of local rugby player Dale Jansen on Monday, 28 April 2025.

According to a SAPS media statement, Philippi East police responded to a shooting complaint and arrived to find Jansen’s body riddled with multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigations suggest the shooting may have followed an argument, but authorities have not released further details. Police have opened an inquest and continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the killing.
