South Africa’s U20 squad aka Amajita are the talk of the town after they clinched a thrilling 1-0 against Morocco to secure the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) gold for the first time in the tournament’s history.
Recently, South Africa’s u20 squad met to clash against Morocco in an exciting U20 AFCON final. This match was o regular game, but rather one that is filled with rich history, as these two country’s have not met in this tournament since the infamous 1997 clash, which saw Amajita go to war without their star player Benni McCarthy. The boys lost out on the final with a 1-0 defeat, and haven’t reached a final since, until this year.
The road to the AFCON final was not an easy one for Amajita, and got off on the wrong foot with a 1-0 defeat to Egypt, however saw some improvement along the way, and eventually saw the youngsters avenging their class of 1997 with a 1-0 victory over Morocco.

It goes without saying that this victory is a significant one mzansi, particularly the future of South African football. It has given fans a revived hope in the general state of the the sport, and Bafana Bafana’s chances in AFCON as well as the FIFA World Cup.
Gomolemo Kekana’s goal, which was ruled as offside and then overturned after a VAR review, led the South African side to its victory. While Fletcher Smythe-Lowe snatched both Man of the Match and Goalkeeper of the Tournament honours.
